Quote meThe problem
- 30% of Swedish women feel uncomfortable at work when menstruating
- 40% feel awkward bringing out period products in the workplace
- 88% have employers who do not provide free period products in the workplace
(Source: Demoskop & Lindex 2022)
Which leads to
- “MacGyvering” period products out of toilet paper
- Needing to leave the workplace to acquire period products
- Effect on productivity and individual’s sense of safety since the situation gives rise to feelings of shame, irritation, anxiety, and panic
This is bad for business. And for equality.
Period proofing in three simple steps:
Period products
Set up Menssäkrad boxes with period products in all restrooms. They need to be as accessible as toilet paper once seated on the porcelain throne!
Waste baskets
Nobody wants to walk among their colleagues with a bloody menstrual pad in their hand. Simply provide waste baskets and the problem is solved.
Sink and soap
Hygiene and health is important to everyone. Changing a tampon or cleaning a menstrual cup requires a sink and soap in order to avoid bacteria and disease.
Advantages. Mic drop.
-
Safety
To unexpectedly get your period while at work without having any period products at hand influences productivity and the menstruator’s sense of individual safety. The situation causes feelings of shame, irritation, stress/anxiety, and even panic.
-
Equality
Period proofing is an important step towards ensuring a more equal and equitable world.- It guarantees a better workplace environment for all menstruators
-
Productivity
Or in other words: logistics. It’s a shorter distance to the restroom than to the store. Coworkers can keep working in peace without time consuming interruptions.
-
Popular employer
Gen Y and Z will soon dominate the entire workforce. They have high expectations. Surveys have shown that they choose employers who prioritize equality, equity and the workplace environment.
The heroes moving the work forward
“We want to take responsibility and create safety.”
“Menstruation should not be hidden.”
“The box is the right size to keep in the restroom where it’s needed the most!”
“A prerequisite to inclusion and equality.”
“An obvious and important step in the work towards equality.”
“Period products must be as natural as toilet paper.”
Our own period products
In our storage boxes you find pads and tampons made out of 100% ecological cotton. Our products are kind to you and to the environment. The pad and the tampon have a surface and core made out of ecological cotton. All our products are dermatologically tested and perfume free. The winged pads are individually packaged in wrappers made out of starch and biodegradable plastic. The tampons in normal size are packaged in NatureFlex™ (100% cellulose).
Both the tampons and the pads are made in Europe. 100% ecological cotton. Dermatologically tested. Biodegradable. Perfume free.
Myth busters
"What a waste!"
Nobody will menstruate more just because there are period products available. Menstruation frequency will stay the same. So it is not at all a waste, but actually really useful!
”but it’s too expensive”
Period proofing is a small investment with a large return in the long run. To period proof a coworker is cheaper over time than the cost for average coffee consumption.
”If period products are supposed to be free, then shaving equipment should be, too!”
A bushy beard does not limit a person the same way menstruating does. But if you feel this is an important issue, go for it! Run a campaign to provide free razors at work. Engagement is important.
Trust your coworkers
One of the greatest concern people express is that coworkers will take too much of the provided period products. But we know that it’s just a false assumption.
Why should just period products be limited? Why not limit coffee, fruit or office supplies? In an era when more companies strive for a self-reliance culture, setting time limits on period products supplies seem out of place. Period products should not be rationed. What message about trust does that send?
Let go of the control and trust your coworkers that they will only take what they need. It’s a win-win!
